The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has expressed strong optimism that he will be granted bail by the end of April 2025, after spending four years in detention.
Kanu made this statement during a visit by the President-General of the Igbo Community Association (ICA), Engr. Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, at the Department of State Services (DSS) facility in Abuja, where he is being held.
According to a statement issued by Ezenekwe, Kanu appeared upbeat and in good health during the meeting, surprising many given the difficult circumstances of his detention.
Ezenekwe described Kanu as “healthier and more relaxed” than expected, revealing that the IPOB leader had even gained weight, contrary to reports of his deteriorating condition.
The visit, which centered around discussions on the ongoing political and social issues affecting the Igbo community, saw Kanu reaffirm his commitment to self-determination.
He reiterated his call for a referendum as the only path to address the region’s aspirations and expressed his belief that he had committed no offense other than advocating for the awakening of the Igbo people.
Kanu’s message was clear—he remains confident in his legal team and expects a favorable ruling soon.
He also expressed his disappointment over the current leadership vacuum within the Igbo community, which he believes has hindered the region’s progress and diminished its voice at a critical moment
“Let this moment serve as a turning point—a renewal of our collective determination to safeguard the rights, dignity, and future of the Igbo people,” Kanu reportedly said, emphasizing the need for stronger leadership and advocacy for Igbo interests.
In response to his visit, Ezenekwe made an urgent appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to take action and ensure Kanu’s release.
He called for the president to demonstrate a commitment to justice and democracy by addressing Kanu’s case, which has become a symbol of the struggle for Igbo recognition and rights.
Ezenekwe’s call for action resonates as a plea not only for Kanu’s release but for a broader movement to address the socio-political challenges facing the Igbo nation.
The visit has sparked renewed calls for the Nigerian government to act decisively in resolving the issue of the IPOB leader’s detention and to pave the way for greater unity and progress within the Igbo community.
