The Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, Bayo Ojulari, has declared that the oil firm will not bow to “attacks and short-term pressures” from those resisting ongoing reforms in the company.
Ojulari, who spoke in Abuja on Thursday while receiving a delegation of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) led by its president, Festus Osifo, said the company was determined to pursue far-reaching changes that would benefit Nigerians despite opposition.
“We are under attack, but we will not budge to short-term pressure. Change comes with a price, and this transformation is tough, but it is for the good of Nigeria,” he said.
The NNPC boss emphasised that the management was committed to reviving the nation’s moribund refineries through a sustainable model rather than rushing into quick fixes.
According to him, the Incorporated Joint Venture (IJV) arrangement under consideration would ensure long-term efficiency and profitability of the facilities.
“Mr President does not pressure me to do the wrong thing. We are laying a baseline to make sure the refineries work sustainably going forward. We don’t want to pretend or do a cosmetic fix just because of pressure,” Ojulari stated.
He urged Nigerians to exercise patience, assuring that the transformation currently underway would yield results in due time.
He also appreciated PENGASSAN for standing by the company in what he described as a challenging reform phase.
“The enemies of this company and Nigerians will not win. I am overwhelmed with the support from the union executives present here. We must stay calm, resilient, and steadfast,” Ojulari added.
On his part, PENGASSAN president, Osifo, commended the Ojulari-led management for its role in reducing crude oil theft and improving output, stressing that the union would continue to collaborate with the company to stabilise the oil sector.
“Our pipelines are now working, and crude oil theft has significantly reduced, leading to increased production. As PENGASSAN, we assure you that we are solidly behind you,” Osifo said.
Since assuming office five months ago, Ojulari has rolled out a reform agenda aimed at repositioning the NNPC as a profitable, transparent, and globally competitive company, with particular focus on refining capacity and energy security.
