Between August 26 and September 1, 2023, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) reported a staggering 150 crude oil theft incidents, primarily concentrated in Bayelsa, Rivers, Imo, and Delta states.

This revelation was made through a video shared on the company’s official Twitter account on Tuesday, September 5.

The report disclosed that during this period, authorities located and dismantled a total of 56 illegal refineries.

Additionally, 22 illegal connections and 9 Vessel AIS Infractions were uncovered.

Law enforcement agencies arrested 16 vehicles related to these incidents, and a total of 7 pipeline vandalism acts were detected.

The incidents were not evenly distributed across the regions.

The Western region recorded 24 incidents, while the Central region reported 50 incidents. The Eastern region of the oil-rich Niger Delta experienced the highest number of incidents, with a staggering 67 cases reported.

These alarming statistics underscore the ongoing challenges and efforts required to combat crude oil theft and related illegal activities in Nigeria’s oil-producing regions.
