The Board of Trustees, BoT, of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, has suspended it’s presidential candidate in the February 25 election, Rabiu Kwankwanso and the party’s National Working Committee, NWC, for six months over alleged involvement in anti party activities.
This decision was made public on Tuesday, as it was the outcome of a voice vote cast by members during a special general assembly held at Rockview Hotels in Apapa.
To fill the leadership void, new national officers have been appointed on an interim basis, with Dr. Agbo Major serving as the acting National Chairman, and Mr. Ogini Olaposi as the acting National Secretary, accompanied by 18 others.
Earlier on August 24, the NWC had announced the suspension of the party’s founder, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, and the National Publicity Secretary, Major.
These developments culminated in an address to the press in Lagos, wherein the Secretary of the BoT, Babayo Muhammed Abdulahi, elucidated the reasons behind the actions taken.
Abdulahi expressed concern that Kwankwaso’s interactions with individuals such as President Bola Tinubu, PDP’s presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, were carried out without proper authorization from the party’s board.
He added that such actions, in the eyes of the BoT, constituted anti-party activities.
Therefore, the BoT declared that Kwankwaso would no longer hold the status of NNPP national leader, as it stressed that the suspension of the party’s founder, Aniebonam, was a breach of the party’s constitution.
In response to this situation, a new BoT Chairman, Dr. Chief Tope Aluko, was elected, alongside Abdulahi as the new BoT Secretary, and High Chief Tony Obioha as the BoT spokesperson.
Abdulahi emphasized that the pre-election Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with entities such as the Kwankwasia Movement, The National Movement (TNM), and the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF), had been rendered void due to the actions of the NWC.
Consequently, the BoT declared a withdrawal from this partnership.
Therefore, the BoT stated that the suspension of Kwankwaso was the result of concrete evidence indicating his involvement in activities that went against the party’s interests, stressing that this suspension, valid for six months, is pending the results of an investigation by the Disciplinary Committee.
