…Honours Correctional Officers For Excellence, Service To Humanity

The African Emerging Leadership, Research and Development Organisation (AELRDO) has applauded the Ogun State Command of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) for maintaining stability and preventing jailbreaks across custodial centres in the state.
Speaking during the organisation’s Prize for Peace and Service to Humanity Award Ceremony held in Abeokuta, the Director of Research, Dr. Rhuefe Khaese, said Ogun remains one of the few states in the federation without any record of jailbreaks — a feat he attributed to the vigilance, professionalism, and discipline of correctional officers.
“Ogun State has remained peaceful because officers and men of the Correctional Service are always on ground, ensuring there’s no breakdown of order or attempt at jailbreak. Their dedication deserves recognition,” Dr. Khaese stated.
He commended the Controller of Corrections, Ogun State Command, CC Abioye Kamoru Adesina, for his leadership and proactive management of the state’s custodial facilities despite operational challenges such as manpower shortage and overcrowding.
“Dr. Abioye has demonstrated outstanding leadership by effectively mobilising his officers and ensuring that the high inmate population — which stands at about 4,600 — is well managed,” Khaese added.
In his response, Abioye attributed the Command’s success to teamwork and the unwavering commitment of his officers across the various correctional centres in Ogun State.
“We work together as a family and draw strength from one another’s experience. Despite limited personnel, we have maintained discipline, focus, and order,” he said.
Abioye also highlighted the Service’s ongoing efforts in rehabilitation and reformation, disclosing that over 300 inmates had graduated from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and 250 others from Yewa Central College of Education, in addition to several vocational and skills acquisition programmes.
“Our commitment goes beyond keeping inmates in custody. We are focused on transforming lives through education, vocational training, and counseling to ensure successful reintegration into society,” he added.
The Controller, while thanking AELRDO for the recognition, reaffirmed the Service’s dedication to peace, reform, and the protection of human rights, stressing that effective rehabilitation was key to national development.
“Peace is the bedrock of a brighter future, and rehabilitation is a crucial pathway to redemption. Effective leadership empowers others to drive positive change,” he said.
At the event, eight senior correctional officers were honoured for their exceptional contributions to peace and humanity. The awardees included: CC Abioye Kamoru Adesina – Controller of Corrections, Ogun State Command; DCC Sanni Ojo Richard – Officer in Charge, Old Abeokuta Custodial Centre ; DCC Ogun Sanya – K9 Unit Commander; ACC A. Mustapha – Officer in Charge, Ijebu-Ode Correctional Centre and ACC Oladiti – Officer in Charge, Farm Centre .
Others are ; ACC Bolaji Joseph – Officer in Charge, New Abeokuta Custodial Centre ; and ACC David Akadri – Officer in Charge, Sagamu Custodial Centre .
AELRDO described the awards as a recognition of the recipients’ “commitment to peace, leadership excellence, and service to humanity.”
Abioye, who spoke on behalf of all the awardees, dedicated the honour to the Controller General of Corrections, CGC Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom he said had consistently supported the reform drive of the Nigerian Correctional Service.
“This recognition reminds us that our work transcends personal achievement. It’s about shaping a better future for Nigeria and Africa,” he stated.
The event ended with renewed calls for collaboration among government agencies, civil society, and development organisations to strengthen correctional reforms and promote lasting peace across Nigeria.
