In a significant announcement, Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu has firmly stated that Nigerian communities should not be burdened with the financial responsibility of purchasing transformers, cables, poles, and related materials.
The minister emphasized this point during a crucial meeting with the management of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company in Ibadan, Oyo State, as part of a comprehensive facility tour.
Adelabu underscored that it is the duty of distribution companies to supply transformers, cables, and poles to communities, a move seen as crucial for the improvement of power supply across the nation.
The government, he asserted, is unwavering in its commitment to fulfilling the needs of the people, with a focus on enhancing their living standards.
Expressing concern over the persistent complaints from power consumers regarding the metering system, the minister assured that steps would be taken to address the situation.
One notable measure mentioned was the cancellation of estimated billings in the power sector, signaling a commitment to fair and transparent billing practices.
Highlighting the openness to collaboration with the private sector, Adelabu stressed the need for effective distribution and customer service.
He questioned the efficacy of existing service centers and urged distribution companies to ensure prompt resolution of customer complaints.
The minister adamantly declared, “A situation where communities buy transformers, cables, and poles must stop. If the consumers are paying for electricity, then it is the responsibility of the distribution companies to provide these items.”
He urged an end to the news of communities independently procuring such crucial power infrastructure.
Emphasizing the government’s vision for improved power supply, Adelabu stated, “People should not pay for darkness.
When people have a 24-hour power supply, they can pay double for electricity because you have saved them the money to power generators.”
He cited the successful example in Kaduna as evidence of the government’s commitment to prioritizing service to the people.
