No Plans To Suspend Wike and Others Despite Alleged Anti-Party Activities

In a resolute stand, Umar Damagum, the Acting Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), declared that the National Working Committee (NWC) under his leadership will refrain from suspending or dismissing any ‘disloyal’ members.

He added that  he was not planning to suspend or expel  former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike.

Addressing the PDP Mobilisers Group in Abuja, Damagum brushed aside calls for sanctions, emphasizing the party’s commitment to reconciliation.

The recent clamor for disciplinary actions against Wike and others stemmed from allegations of anti-party activities during the recent general elections.

However, Damagum clarified that the NWC had sanctioned the formation of a committee to review and reconcile aggrieved members, prioritizing unity over punitive measures.

Speaking passionately about leadership responsibilities, Damagum asserted, “When you are in a position of leadership, you are bound by a set of rules, and these rules, even though they are itching you, you don’t apply them—not because of anything, but so that you don’t destroy the house.”

He underscored the party’s dedication to expanding its base and cautioned against actions that might undermine its cohesion.

Acknowledging the pain of the 2023 presidential election defeat, Damagum urged party members to avoid a blame game.

He disclosed the NWC’s approval of a comprehensive 2023 election review and reconciliation committee, tasked with investigating activities from 2015 to 2019. This initiative aims to address concerns and pave the way for informed decisions based on thorough evaluations.

Despite acknowledging the involvement of many members in anti-party activities, Damagum expressed reluctance to resort to mass suspensions, stating, “If I said we should start suspension, I will end up suspending many people because they were involved in anti-party activities.

So, please bear with us. We intend to keep this party together and to manage it. This is my mandate.”
