Former Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has said she did not regret over her handling of the ministry, stating that she could not have acted differently during her tenure in President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
In a candid interview on Channels Television on Wednesday, Kennedy-Ohanenye, who was among the five ministers dismissed by Tinubu in October, reflected on her time in office, which was marked by several controversies.
These included her threat to sue the United Nations (UN) over alleged mismanagement of funds meant for Nigeria.
When asked about the reasons behind her removal, Kennedy-Ohanenye declined to speculate, saying, “I’m not a witch to know why I was sacked. I have decided not to think about it. The important thing is that I have been sacked, and I have refocused on what I was doing before.”
Despite her departure, Kennedy-Ohanenye emphasized that her commitment to defending vulnerable individuals, especially women and children, remains unwavering.
She defended her approach to her role, dismissing criticisms that she lacked diplomacy in handling sensitive issues.
Kennedy-Ohanenye explained that her work involved responding to pressing humanitarian concerns, such as the case of a rape victim, where immediate intervention was needed.
She refuted claims that she was not diplomatic in her approach, asserting, “As a minister, you are supposed to be a servant; you listen to the people and respond quickly before things go wrong.”
She also dismissed criticisms of her hands-on approach, which saw her personally visiting police stations and addressing issues directly rather than relying solely on bureaucratic channels.
“Some said, ‘Why can’t she just call the IGP?’ But I’m sorry for some people, the way they think. Being a minister is about serving the people,” she said.
Kennedy-Ohanenye concluded that her tenure as minister was driven by a deep sense of responsibility and service, emphasizing, “I have no regrets in the way I did my job. I don’t think I could have done it better.”
