Senate President Godswill Akpabio has denied allegations that senators received a $15,000 bribe to support the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, dismissing the claims as part of a malicious campaign against him.
The allegations, which have gained traction on social media, suggested that Akpabio distributed dollars to lawmakers at his Maitama residence during a breaking-of-fast event.
The reports claimed that each senator first received $5,000 on Tuesday and an additional $10,000 on Wednesday, ahead of the critical vote.
Breaking his silence on the matter, Akpabio, through his Special Adviser on Media, Eseme Eyiboh, described the accusations as baseless and politically motivated.
“Since Senator Godswill Akpabio assumed office as Senate President, he has been hosting breaking-of-fast gatherings.
He did it last year and did it again this year. So why are people now twisting it into a bribery allegation?” Eyiboh stated.
He further questioned the rationale behind the claims, insisting there was no monetary inducement.
“Why would he be giving out dollars? For what purpose? The allegation of $5,000 or $10,000 is false. People are just fabricating this story to fuel their malice and smear campaign,” he added.
Despite the controversy, both the Senate and the House of Representatives passed the proclamation of a state of emergency in Rivers State through a unanimous voice vote on Thursday.
