Nollywood filmmaker and actor, Stanley Amandi, has been arrested over his alleged involvement in a plot to violently overthrow the administration of President Bola Tinubu, in what security sources describe as a major breach uncovered through intelligence operations late last year.
Investigations revealed that Amandi, a former chairman of the Enugu State chapter of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), was taken into custody in September 2025 alongside several serving and retired military officers suspected to be central figures in the foiled coup attempt.
According to security sources, the actor was allegedly recruited by the plotters to serve as a civilian propagandist, tasked with shaping public narratives and messaging to legitimise the planned takeover once the operation was executed.
The alleged conspiracy reportedly went beyond regime change, with investigators uncovering plans to assassinate key political office holders, including President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas.
The Defence Headquarters recently confirmed that a special investigative panel had concluded its probe into acts of indiscipline within the military linked to the plot.
The panel recommended court-martial for implicated officers, while civilians connected to the case, including Amandi, are expected to face prosecution in civil courts.
Amandi’s arrest marks the first public disclosure of civilian involvement in the alleged coup, which security agencies say was uncovered following months of covert intelligence surveillance and counter-subversion operations across multiple locations in the country.
Checks by Platform Times revealed that Amandi, who directed films such as The Album and Tiger King and featured in Once Upon a Dream (2024), has not been active on social media since September 19, 2025 — shortly before his reported arrest.
Authorities, however, stressed that investigations are ongoing and that all suspects remain innocent until proven guilty in court.
More details on the alleged plot, including the extent of civilian collaboration and timelines for prosecution, are expected to emerge as legal proceedings commence.
