The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reported that 2,404 road traffic crashes led to the deaths of 1,305 Nigerians nationwide during the second quarter of 2024.
The report detailed that the North-Central and South-West regions recorded the highest numbers of accidents and casualties.
The data indicated that fatalities were overwhelmingly male, with 1,076 men, including male children, killed, accounting for 82.45% of all road fatalities.
Additionally, 5,837 males were reported injured, representing 76.30% of the total injured. Female casualties, including children, amounted to 229, or 17.55% of those killed, while 1,813 females were injured, accounting for 23.7% of the injured populace.
The NBS report noted that serious crashes constituted the majority, with 1,525 serious accidents recorded, alongside 661 fatal incidents and 218 minor cases.
A total of 3,612 vehicles were involved in these crashes.
According to the regional breakdown, the North-Central zone led with 867 crashes, followed by the South-West with 661.
The South-East had the least incidents, with 119 crashes reported. Similarly, the North-Central reported the highest casualty figure of 3,020, followed closely by the South-West with 2,019. The South-South reported the lowest number, with 452 casualties.
The vehicles involved in these accidents included 1,123 private cars, 2,446 commercial vehicles, 40 government vehicles, and three diplomat vehicles.
Notably, 234 trailers were involved, along with 949 cars, 496 trucks, and 706 minibuses.
Among other vehicles, there were also 157 tricycles, 743 motorcycles, 77 pick-ups, and 14 luxury buses.
The report attributed these crashes primarily to speed violations, mechanically deficient vehicles, and poor road conditions, underscoring the urgent need for improved road safety measures across the country.
