The North-East Development Commission (NEDC) has delivered palliatives worth N15 billion to the six states in the North-Eastern region, which include Borno, Adamawa, Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi, and Taraba states.

Vice President Kashim Shettima presented these food and non-food items to the governors of the respective states during a ceremony held in Maiduguri on Saturday.

Shettima commended the NEDC for its responsible management of limited resources, revealing that the destruction in the six states due to various crises amounted to nine billion dollars.

He particularly highlighted that Borno alone accounted for 6.8 billion dollars in damages.

During the ceremony, Shettima also inaugurated the 22.5 km Mafa-Jere road project being executed by NEDC. He urged the commission to consider undertaking critical federal road projects connecting the states in the region to enhance socio-economic activities.

Mohammed Alkali, the Managing Director of NEDC, explained that providing N15 billion worth of food palliatives was aligned with the Federal Government’s initiative to alleviate the hardships faced by the less privileged, especially in the face of rising food prices and increased food insecurity nationwide.

Alkali further noted that the Mafa-Jere road was part of the 38.66 km Zabarmari Area Roads Network, which included roads like Ngowom-Koshebe, Galameri-Dusuman, and Khaddamari-Zabarmari-Gongolong. These projects aim to enhance security, mobility of people and goods, and improve access to important agrarian areas in Borno

The NEDC is actively involved in several infrastructural projects across the North-Eastern region, including road construction, mass housing, mega schools, hospitals, and more, in line with the 11 Pillars of the North-East Master Plan and the Federal Government’s efforts to address infrastructural deficits and stimulate long-term socio-economic development.

The items presented during the ceremony included rice, cartons of spaghetti/macaroni, gallons of vegetable oil, blankets, mats, clothing materials for men, women, and children, among other essentials.
