The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has expressed concern over the underdevelopment of Northern Nigeria, emphasizing the region’s lagging progress in education and agriculture.
Sanusi made the remarks on Saturday during the 50th anniversary of the visit of Sheikh Ibrahim Nyass, founder of Faidha Tijjaniyya in West Africa, held in Jos, Plateau State.
Speaking as the guest lecturer, the Emir criticized the North for failing to harness its significant population and vast agricultural potential to foster development.
“The North is grossly underdeveloped, especially in the areas of education and agriculture, which are crucial for progress.
“A large percentage of the region’s population remains agrarian, but they lack the requisite knowledge of modern agricultural technology,” Sanusi said.
The traditional ruler called on stakeholders to prioritize investments in education and agricultural development to uplift the region and improve the living standards of its people.
He stressed that the North must urgently address these challenges to achieve meaningful progress.
While delivering a lecture on harmonious coexistence in a multi-ethnic and religious society, Sanusi reflected on the historical visit of Sheikh Nyass to Nigeria 50 years ago.
He recalled how the Senegalese cleric, invited by then-Head of State General Yakubu Gowon, worked to promote peace between Muslims and non-Muslims in the Benue-Plateau region.
Sanusi further highlighted that his grandfather, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi I, hosted Sheikh Nyass with the support of J.D. Gomwalk, the then-Governor of Benue-Plateau State.
Commending the current Plateau State government for its support of the Muslim community, Sanusi urged Muslims to complement the administration’s efforts to achieve lasting peace and development in the state.
The Emir’s remarks come amid growing calls for Northern leaders to address the region’s socio-economic challenges, which have hampered its growth and widened the gap with other parts of the country.
