The Nigeria Police Force has said the N100 million allegedly traced to the personal bank account of Victor Egbetokun, son of the outgoing Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, was paid in error and subsequently returned.
The clarification followed an online report alleging that the funds were transferred from the Anambra State Government’s security vote account into the younger Egbetokun’s account.
Reacting during an appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television on Monday, the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, dismissed insinuations of wrongdoing, insisting that the transaction was a banking error promptly rectified.
According to Hundeyin, Victor Egbetokun alerted his accounts officer immediately after discovering the N100 million credit in his account and instructed that the money be reversed without delay.
“You would recall when it was alleged that N100 million was paid into the account of the son of the IGP. I immediately contacted him to ascertain what transpired,” Hundeyin said.
“He said he noticed the N100 million inflow and directed his accounts officer to reverse it instantly, which was done. He printed his statement of account and showed evidence that the money had been returned.”
The police spokesperson added that the account holder subsequently shut down the affected account to avoid further controversy.
Hundeyin further disclosed that Victor Egbetokun had petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, urging the anti-graft agency to investigate the allegation and establish the true circumstances surrounding the transaction.
He maintained that the funds were returned to the Anambra State Government shortly after the error was detected, stressing that there was no illicit enrichment.
The controversy erupted after activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore publicly alleged that the N100 million was paid into the account from the state’s security vote.
Security votes are discretionary funds allocated to state governors for security-related expenditures and are often shielded from detailed public scrutiny.
As of press time, the Anambra State Government had yet to issue an official statement clarifying how the alleged erroneous transfer occurred.
The police authorities, however, insisted that due process was followed once the anomaly was discovered and reiterated their commitment to transparency and accountability amid heightened public concern.
