A tragic incident on Sunday morning has thrown the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) into mourning after one of its operatives accidentally shot and killed a colleague in Abuja.
The incident occurred around 10:20 a.m. at Life Camp, a high-brow district in the Federal Capital Territory, while officers were reportedly en route to a principal’s residence at Lias Estate from Corner View Hotel.
The deceased officer, identified as Deputy Superintendent of Corps (DSC) Adekunle Emmanuel, was said to have been hit by a bullet fired from the rifle of a fellow operative.
Reports indicated that the shot struck Emmanuel on his left upper arm, just above the bicep.
He was immediately rushed to Maitama General Hospital, where doctors confirmed him dead on arrival.
His remains have since been deposited in the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Confirming the development, a senior security source who spoke under anonymity described the incident as “an unfortunate operational mishap” and disclosed that the shooter has been placed in custody for interrogation.
“It was a case of accidental discharge. Sadly, the officer could not survive the gunshot wound despite efforts by medical personnel,” the source said.
The NSCDC has yet to issue an official statement on the matter as of the time of filing this report.
This latest incident adds to concerns about the increasing cases of accidental discharges among security agencies in Nigeria, often leading to avoidable loss of lives.
Security experts have repeatedly called for stricter firearms handling protocols and regular retraining of personnel to minimize such tragedies.
