The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a symbol of integrity, discipline, and Islamic devotion who served the nation with unwavering commitment.
In a statement signed by the NSCIA Secretary General, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, and issued from its national headquarters in Abuja on Monday, the council announced the demise of Buhari, who passed on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
Under the leadership of its President-General and Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the NSCIA described Buhari’s passing as a significant loss to Nigeria and the Muslim Ummah.
“Former President Buhari was a beacon of integrity and discipline who lived a life anchored in the principles of Islam and inspired millions of people through his personal example and public conduct,” the statement read.
The council highlighted Buhari’s unique place in Nigeria’s history, having led the country both as a military Head of State and a democratically elected President.
It noted that his life and leadership symbolised “faith, persistence, humility, and discipline,” virtues the Muslim community and nation at large should emulate.
NSCIA offered its heartfelt condolences to Buhari’s widow, Hajiya Aisha Buhari, his children, extended family, the Emir of Daura and the people of Katsina State.
It also commiserated with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, acknowledging Buhari as a close political associate and predecessor.
Quoting from the Qur’an (Aal Imran 3:185), the council reminded Nigerians of the inevitability of death, urging reflection and steadfastness in faith.
“In this moment of grief, we beseech the Almighty Allah (SWT), the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, to forgive his shortcomings, envelop him in His boundless mercy, and grant him Al-Jannatul Firdaus, the highest abode in Paradise,” the statement concluded.
The council also prayed for national unity, divine guidance for Nigeria’s leaders, and a rekindled spirit of service and humility among citizens.
Buhari’s death has continued to draw reactions from across religious, political, and cultural divides, with many describing him as one of Nigeria’s most consequential leaders.
