The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has opened a formal investigation into the crash-landing of a Flybird Aircraft Management Services Limited jet at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano State.
The affected aircraft, a Hawker 800XP with registration number 5N-ISB, was en route from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, when the incident occurred on Sunday morning.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the aircraft departed Abuja at about 9:20am and developed a landing gear indication problem while approaching Kano, forcing the flight crew to alert air traffic controllers.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Sunday, the Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance at the NSIB, Mrs Bimbo Oladeji, said the crew requested several low passes over the runway to enable visual confirmation of the aircraft’s landing gear position.
According to her, air traffic controllers at the Kano Tower confirmed during each low pass that the three landing gears appeared fully extended.
She explained that the aircraft was eventually cleared to land on Runway 06 and touched down at about 10:34am local time.
“During the landing roll, the nose landing gear collapsed. All eight persons on board disembarked safely, with no injuries reported,” Oladeji said.
Although earlier reports indicated that 11 persons, including three crew members, were on board the aircraft, the NSIB said eight occupants safely exited the jet after the incident.
Following the development, the bureau said it had activated its emergency response team to determine the cause of the occurrence.
“Upon notification, the NSIB activated its Go-Team. Investigators will examine the aircraft systems, operational procedures, maintenance records and crew actions to determine the circumstances that led to the occurrence,” the statement added.
The incident caused temporary disruption at the Kano airport, as aviation authorities worked to secure the runway and ensure the safety of other operations.
The NSIB assured the public that findings from the investigation would be made public in line with international aviation safety standards.
