Nigeria Union of Journalists Cross River State Council has called on the federal government to rehabilitate the Calabar-Uyo federal highway as well as other dilapidated federal roads that crisscross parts of the state.
The union made the call in a communique issued at the end of their congress in Calabar and signed by the state chairman of NUJ, Archibong Bassey.
The union lamented the very deplorable state of the named road as well as the very slow pace of rehabilitation work.
According to them, it has caused manhour delays, countless deaths, economic losses as well as damages to trucks and other smaller vehicles.
The union called on relevant federal authorities to intervene on the various federal roads in the state.
They listed the roads in dire need of urgent attention to include; the Calabar-Uyo, Calabar-Ugep, Ikom-Wula-Obudu, as well as Ikom-Ogoja-Katsina Ala roads.
They added that urgent repairs would cushion the pains suffered by motorists and other road users while boosting economic activities and creating passable routes for Carnival lovers and tourists into the state.
