The significance of meticulous record-keeping in nursing was a central theme at the strategic leadership retreat for political and nursing leaders, held as part of the 2024 Nurses Week organized by the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Ogun State branch.

Under the leadership of Comrade Nurse Adejoke Bello, the event underscored the critical role of accurate documentation in healthcare.

During the retreat, a speaker, Mr. Afolabi Adun emphasized that diligent record-keeping can prevent numerous avoidable issues.

“Many people find themselves in problems simply because they assume everyone is as honest as they are,” Adun stated.

He warned against the quick deletion of messages and chats, stressing the importance of maintaining detailed records to avoid situations where only divine intervention could serve as a witness.

Adun also highlighted the necessity of mentorship and delegation in leadership. “We must raise people because the small boys of today will be the bosses of tomorrow,” he said.

He detailed essential qualities of good leaders, including crisis management, self-preservation, prudence, financial discipline, goal setting, sacrifice, and accountability.

The retreat further explored the characteristics distinguishing good leaders from bad ones.

Good leaders were described as proactive and demon-like in their dedication, while bad leaders were labeled as autocratic and reactive.

The session also introduced the “7 Cs of Communication,” which are crucial for effective leadership: Correctness, Completeness, Conciseness, Concreteness, Consideration, Courtesy, and Clarity.
