The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has intensified its call for the enforcement of a court order mandating the former President of the union, Najeem Usman Yasin, to vacate the union’s National Secretariat.
In a bid to prevent potential chaos, the NURTW has appealed to prominent figures including President Bola Tinubu, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, and Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation Lateef Fagbemi to intervene in the matter.
At a press conference held in Abuja on Thursday, the President of the union, Alhaji Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa, accompanied by his lawyer, Tolu Babaleye, addressed the media regarding the recent judgment by the National Industrial Court.
The court ruling, delivered on March 11, 2024, reaffirmed Baruwa’s position as the legitimate President for a second term, dismissing challenges from Najeem’s faction.
Baruwa condemned Najeem’s public dismissal of the court’s authority, labeling it as contemptuous and disrespectful.
Najeem’s purported statement, made in a viral video, downplayed the court’s decision and announced plans to install Musiliu Ayinde Akinsanya (MC Oluomo) as the National President of the union, further exacerbating tensions within the NURTW.
Tolu Babaleye emphasized the urgency of enforcing the court’s judgment and restraining Najeem from interfering in the union’s affairs.
He called upon various governmental and law enforcement bodies to ensure compliance with the court order, highlighting the alleged coup d’état orchestrated by Najeem’s faction to seize control of the National Secretariat.
Detailing the court’s ruling, Babaleye explained that the judgment validated Baruwa’s election and nullified Najeem’s attempts to undermine the union’s leadership..
The court also declared certain appointments made by Najeem’s faction as unlawful, reinstating individuals aligned with Baruwa.
In response, Alhaji Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa urged union members to remain calm, assuring them that relevant authorities would take necessary actions to uphold the rule of law.
He expressed confidence that the intervention of key figures would resolve the dispute and restore stability within the NURTW.
As the NURTW awaits further action from the authorities, tensions remain high within the union.
Members across the state are urged to exercise restraint while the legal process unfolds, with hopes that adherence to the court order will bring an end to the leadership crisis plaguing the organization.
