The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has refuted recent social media claims that corps members’ bank accounts are being upgraded in preparation for the payment of a new N70,000 minimum wage.
The agency clarified that no directive has been issued by any relevant authority to initiate such payments or upgrade accounts.
In a statement released on Saturday, the NYSC’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa, described the circulating report as misleading and entirely false.
He emphasized that the organization has not received any instruction from the government regarding the implementation of a N70,000 minimum wage for corps members.
“The attention of the National Youth Service Corps management has been drawn to misleading information circulating in the media regarding the payment of N70,000 minimum wage to corps members and the directive to upgrade their accounts. This is an absolute falsehood which is far from the truth,” the statement read.
The NYSC urged corps members, their families, and the general public to disregard the misleading information.
It highlighted that all official communications are disseminated through approved channels, and no such directive has been communicated through these means.
“Corps members already know the approved channel and mode of communication in the scheme and should therefore ignore the directive accordingly,” the NYSC noted.
The agency also cautioned bloggers and social media influencers to refrain from spreading unauthorized information about the NYSC.
The management stressed that such actions are detrimental and intended to mislead the public, calling for an end to the dissemination of false reports.
This clarification comes amid growing anticipation among corps members and the general public regarding the implementation of a new minimum wage, following the federal government’s announcement of a wage increase earlier this year.
However, the NYSC has made it clear that any official decision on this matter would be communicated through the appropriate channels.
For now, the NYSC has advised corps members to remain patient and vigilant, and to rely only on verified information directly from the organization.
