The National Youth Service Corps has denied the allegation over high food prices and alleged encouragement for corps members to leave orientation camps due to food shortage.
The NYSC Director of Press and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa who issued a statement on Saturday vehemently denied the claims.
Megwa emphasised that the reports were nothing but a “tissue of lies” intended to cause mischief and generate social media traffic.
He refuted the allegation that a State Coordinator urged corps members to depart the orientation camp due to food scarcity, deeming it “laughable, absurd, and unfortunate.”
The statement clarified that camp markets are closely regulated to prevent exploitation of corps members, acknowledging that they are not immune to the global economic challenges.
Megwa highlighted the checks and balances within the NYSC framework, including Resident Officers from the National Directorate Headquarters in Abuja, who oversee camp management during the three-week orientation course.
Furthermore, the statement outlined the monitoring duties of officers from the directorate cadre, ensuring compliance with policies regarding the welfare of corps members.
The Director General, Brig Gen YD Ahmed, and his team visit NYSC Orientation Camps nationwide each season to oversee the well-being of corps members.
Megwa stressed that generating false information for pecuniary benefits is “unthinkable and immoral,” causing unnecessary anxiety among parents and relatives.
The NYSC, from the highest echelon to the lowest, maintains an open-door policy and is willing to address inquiries for clarification on its operations.
