The National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) has distanced itself from the case involving Ukanwa Ikechukwu, a former corp member who was arraigned in an Iyaganku Magistrate Court in Oyo State for allegedly scamming a police officer of N235,000.
In a statement signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa, NYSC clarified that Ikechukwu had already passed out in February 2023.
The scheme also cautioned corp members that wearing the NYSC uniform does not grant immunity from criminal activities, and urged them to maintain good behavior and uphold the core values of the NYSC.
The statement further stated that the attention of NYSC Management in Oyo State had been drawn to the circulating information on social media regarding the corps member who was sent to jail for a criminal offense in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Megwa said, “Management wishes to make the following clarifications;
“The said Ukanwa Ikechuwuku is now an ex-corps member who passed out of National Service in February 2023.
“Secondly, when he was serving, he collected a sum of Two Hundred and Thirty Five Thousand naira to purchase a physiotherapy machine for a woman at the police clinic where he was serving but failed to get the machine.
“Every attempt made by the woman to get a refund of her money from this ex-Corps Member proved abortive, therefore she decided to charge him to court for criminal offence.”
The management enjoined corps members to always be of good behaviour and adhere strictly to the core values of the NYSC scheme in all their transactions.
