The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier-General Olakunle Nafiu, has revealed that the Scheme provides services valued at more than ₦14 billion annually to Lagos State and its residents.
Nafiu disclosed this on Thursday during a courtesy visit to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the Lagos State Government House, Marina.
According to him, the economic impact is derived from the contributions of over 44,000 corps members deployed across the state to serve in key sectors, including health, education, and infrastructure.
“In minimum monetary terms, corps members in Lagos contribute over ₦14 billion annually through their services,” Nafiu said, in a statement issued by NYSC’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu.
He noted that the corps members include 333 medical doctors, 306 pharmacists, 274 nurses, and 7,188 teachers, among others. He stressed that Lagos remained the “number one destination” for corps members, partly due to its relative safety and opportunities.
The DG commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for renovating the temporary orientation camp at Iyana-Ipaja, while expressing optimism about the ongoing construction of the 10,000-capacity permanent orientation camp.
He explained that once completed, the camp would end the current practice of “dislodging” some corps members to neighboring states during orientation.
Nafiu further appealed for the provision of an ambulance for the NYSC Lagos Secretariat and sustained government support to enhance the scheme’s operations.
He also lauded the governor for the remodelling of the National Theatre, describing it as “a national monument of repute.”
Established in 1973 by former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, the NYSC was designed to promote national unity after the Nigerian Civil War.
The one-year mandatory scheme for graduates comprises four key components: a three-week orientation course, deployment to a place of primary assignment, community development service, and a passing-out ceremony.
