A member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Ukanwa Ikechukwu was brought before the Iyaganku Magistrate’s Court in Oyo State on Friday for allegedly cheating a police officer out of N235,000.
The police accused the defendant of committing theft and pretense.
However, Ukanwa pleaded not guilty to the offense.
The prosecution counsel, Insp Olufemi Omilana, claimed that Ukanwa fraudulently collected the money from ACP Modupe Okpaleke on December 4, 2022, and used it for his purposes.
Omilana stated that Ukanwa was affiliated with the Police Cottage Hospital in Eleyele, Ibadan where he met ACP Okpaleke.
According to the authorities, ACP Okpaleke, who was introduced to Ukenwa while she was looking for medical treatment for her leg at the Police Cottage Hospital where Ukenwa suggested that she should purchase a bicycle.
He said Ukanwa’s actions violate sections 390 (9) and 419 of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State 2000.
Magistrate M. I. Giwa-Babalola granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties of equal value.
Giwa-Babalola adjourned the case until May 25.
