Oba of Benin Suspends Palace Aides For Distorting Historical Facts

The Benin Traditional Council (BTC) in Edo State has suspended six key traditional functionaries of the Palace of the Oba of Benin, including Johnbull Igbinosun, Iduhonre (Ihogbe), S. E. Aigbiromwen, Efeseoghoba (Ogbelaka), Ogbeide Osagie, and Osamudiame Edo.

PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the  suspension, authorized by His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II, was prompted by their  alleged distortion of historical facts regarding the connection between the Benin Royal Dynasty and the Ooni of Ife.

The individuals, in a meeting with the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, claimed to be emissaries of the Oba of Benin, but instead, they declared themselves as subjects of the Ooni and provided inaccurate information.

“The individuals not only declared themselves as subjects of the Ooni, but also rendered inaccurate and disjointed account of the connection between the Benin Royal Dynasty and the Ooni of Ife.

“The BTC considered the conduct of these functionaries as inappropriate, sacrilegious and calculated to ridicule traditional history and to bring disrepute to the Benin custom,” Iyase of Benin stated.

Describing their actions as sacrilegious and aimed at ridiculing traditional history, the BTC stressed  the importance of accurate historical accounts.

He   urged the public to refer to official sources, such as the book ‘I Remain Sir, Your Obedient Servant’ authored by His Royal Majesty, Erediauwa II, Oba of Benin (1979-2016), for accurate information on the connection between the two ancient monarchies.
