No fewer than 150 residents of Ogun State are set to benefit from a two-week empowerment training programme on livestock domestication and shea butter processing, courtesy of Senator Olugbenga Obadara.
The initiative, titled “Managing and Capacity Training for Livestock Domestication/Farming and Capacity Enhancement for Women and Youth Artisans in Shea Butter Oil Processing/Production Enterprise”, is designed to boost food security and economic empowerment in the state.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting held on Monday in Abeokuta, Senator Obadara, represented by the Managing Director of Sweet FM, Mr. Eddy Aina, said the programme is aimed at equipping beneficiaries with practical skills that will translate into sustainable livelihoods.
“This is about giving our people the tools to survive, thrive, and contribute to food security in our communities,” Obadara stated.
He disclosed that a team of experienced professionals has been assembled to serve as facilitators and resource persons during the training.
Also speaking, Chairman of the consulting firm handling the programme, Mr. Jide Ibitoye, emphasised that the skills acquired would open up income-generating opportunities for participants long after the training ends.
In her remarks, an agricultural consultant and farmer, Mrs. Ayopo Somefun, lamented the underutilisation of agricultural resources in Ogun State. She revealed that over 1.2 million hectares of farmland remain uncultivated in the state.
Somefun urged the government to refocus its policies to harness the potential in the agriculture sector, especially in rural areas.
The programme, which has drawn commendation from stakeholders, is scheduled to begin on Tuesday at the Centenary Hall and the Abeokuta Development Union Hall, both located in the Ake area of the state capital.
Participants, drawn from across the state, will receive hands-on training in livestock farming techniques and the production of shea butter—a key commodity with high economic value, particularly for women and youth.
