Embattled former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has defended his ambition to run for the governorship of Lagos State in 2027, stating that it is not a sin to have such aspirations.
Speaking during a press briefing at his residence in the GRA area of Ikeja on Saturday, Obasa addressed ongoing speculation surrounding his political future.
He challenged any leader in the state to provide evidence that he had publicly expressed a desire to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Obasa clarified, “Having ambition to become a governor is not a sin. Is it? However, I said it on the floor of the house when the budget was presented that I had no thoughts of governorship, but that does not mean I am not qualified or that I lack experience. I still maintain that.”
He also reaffirmed that he remains the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly until the “right thing” has been done.
Obasa criticized the militarization of the assembly complex during the impeachment process, claiming that his removal took place while he was out of the country.
Obasa was removed as speaker on Monday, January 13, 2025, following a vote by more than two-thirds of the 40-member legislative house.
His removal was attributed to alleged misconduct and other offenses. In his place, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, his deputy, was elected as the new Speaker, marking a historic milestone as the first female to hold the position in Lagos State.
Obasa, who has represented Agege Constituency I since 2007, served as speaker from June 2015 until his removal in January 2025.
