Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has stressed the imperative of preserving Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage during a landmark celebration held in Abeokuta.
Obasanjo stated this at an event marking the 50th birthday of Aralola Sherifat Olamuyiwa, popularly called Ara, a distinguished Nigerian cultural ambassador and renowned female drummer.
The commemorative luncheon, hosted at the Green Legacy Hotel of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, drew dignitaries from across Nigeria as well as international guests from India, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
In his address, Obasanjo lamented the waning appreciation for indigenous African cultures amidst the growing dominance of Western influences.
“It is lamentable that many of our rich African cultures are being overshadowed by Western practices,” Obasanjo remarked passionately. “We must safeguard our cultural identity—our language, cuisine, attire—these are our authentic hallmarks.”
Reflecting on his own beliefs, Obasanjo expressed admiration for the Ifa tradition, emphasizing its cultural significance alongside Christianity and Islam.
“Culture is the totality of who we are. Unfortunately, we have relegated some aspects of our culture to the background—our food, our language, our dress, and so on.
“They even say Yoruba is vernacular. That is not right. Yoruba is Yoruba; it is authentic, and we must learn to celebrate what belongs to us because that is authentic.
“I am a Christian. I have been to two churches today, but whoever says Ifa Orunmila is nothing must be a bloody fool because Orunmila has been with us before the advent of Christianity or Islam,” he said.
“Before the advent of Christianity and Islam, there was Ifa Orunmila, embodying profound wisdom,” he affirmed. “To dismiss Ifa is to disregard a vital aspect of our heritage.”
A highlight of the occasion was Obasanjo’s tribute to Ara, celebrating her trailblazing achievements in drumming traditionally dominated by men.
“Ara’s determination has shattered stereotypes,” he declared. “She has not only excelled as a drummer but has also become a global ambassador for our cultural heritage.”
Ara, visibly moved by the honour, expressed gratitude for overcoming health challenges that almost thwarted her journey to this milestone.
“I am grateful to God for preserving my life to witness this day,” she shared emotionally. “I never imagined celebrating my 50th birthday due to health setbacks last year.”
In response to Chief Obasanjo’s gesture, Ara conveyed heartfelt appreciation, acknowledging the significance of the recognition in both her personal life and career.
“This honor will forever be cherished,” she affirmed, “and it motivates me to continue promoting our cultural legacy.”
