Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has described Nigeria’s current socio-economic state as dire, while urging renewed hope and decisive action to address the nation’s leadership challenges.
Speaking at the Chinua Achebe Leadership Forum held at Yale University, Connecticut, USA, Obasanjo lamented the pervasive corruption and leadership failures he believes are responsible for Nigeria’s woes.
In a keynote address titled “Leadership Failure and State Capture in Nigeria,” Obasanjo, whose remarks were delivered via a pre-recorded video due to his presence in the Democratic Republic of Congo, painted a grim picture of Nigeria’s predicament.
“The more the immorality and corruption of a nation, the more the nation sinks into chaos, insecurity, conflict, discord, division, disunity, depression, youth restiveness, confusion, violence, and underdevelopment,” he said.
Obasanjo referenced Chinua Achebe’s 1983 treatise, The Trouble with Nigeria, noting its enduring relevance.
He emphasized Achebe’s assertion that Nigeria’s fundamental issue lies in its leadership. “There is nothing basically wrong with the Nigerian character, land, or climate,” he stated.
“The problem is the unwillingness or inability of its leaders to rise to the responsibility and challenge of personal example, hallmarks of true leadership.”
Obasanjo also drew on international assessments, including those by former U.S. ambassador to Nigeria John Campbell, describing Nigeria as teetering on the brink of failure.
“Unable to keep its citizens safe and secure, Nigeria has become a fully failed state of critical geopolitical concern,” he said, adding, however, that the nation’s size and potential make it “too big to fail.”
Highlighting the concept of state capture, Obasanjo condemned the manipulation of national resources and public institutions for private interests.
“What is happening in Nigeria – right before our eyes – is state capture: the purchase of national assets by political elites and their family members at bargain prices,” he said.
The former president warned of the consequences of this systemic corruption, which includes diminished public trust, stunted economic development, and the erosion of vital services like education and healthcare.
He called for robust local and international laws to curb state capture, emphasizing that public institutions must prioritize the interests of the people over those of special interest groups.
Obasanjo also paid glowing tribute to Chinua Achebe, describing him as a global icon who remains firmly rooted in Nigeria’s identity. “Achebe is an African icon that belongs to Nigeria first,” he declared.
Referencing Achebe’s nickname, the Eagle on the Iroko, Obasanjo noted that the writer’s legacy continues to inspire efforts toward a better Nigeria.
He lauded Yale University for recognizing Achebe’s contributions but reminded the audience of his profound connection to Nigeria and Africa.
A Call to Action
Despite his criticism, Obasanjo concluded on a hopeful note, expressing optimism that Nigeria’s challenges could be overcome with visionary leadership and collective effort. “Let us not fool ourselves,” he said. “There is a lot to be concerned about, but there is also hope for Nigeria.”
The Chinua Achebe Leadership Forum at Yale University served as a platform to reflect on leadership, governance, and the enduring legacy of one of Africa’s literary giants. Obasanjo’s address highlighted the urgent need for Nigeria to rise above its challenges and embrace the ideals of accountability, justice, and exemplary leadership.
