Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has indicted some former governors during his tenure of scheming for to stay beyond their second term constitutional stipulated term .
Obasanjo who governed between 1999 and 2007 was accused of planning to extend his stay in office beyond 2007.but, denied the allegations in various forms .
But,the former president admitted to theis claims in a recent interview, attributing the third term agenda to certain governors who he said were seeking personal gain.
When questioned about his failed third term bid, he stated, “the governors, some of them, were doing it for themselves. Because if the president did a third term, they too would have had a chance for a third term.”
Also recall that in 2006, a bill aimed at amending the 1999 constitution to extend term limits by another four years was unable to pass in the National Assembly.
Former Senate President Ken Nnamani had said that lawmakers in the 5th National Assembly had “sacrificed” their legislative careers in order to halt the controversial third term agenda.
Speaking also, he addressed allegations of corruption against him, emphasizing that his strength lies in fundraising rather than embezzlement.
He therefore urged those unable to match his financial acumen to refrain from criticizing him.
Reacting to the allegation that he attempted to undermine the economy of Lagos state under the leadership of former governor Bola Tinubu,he described the claims as “utter nonsense.”
He questioned whether Tinubu knew anything about the matter and alluded to Tinubu’s ownership of the Alphabeta firm.
Regarding his alleged vindictiveness towards former Governor James Ibori of Delta state, Obasanjo clarified that Ibori had been investigated and found guilty of misappropriating over $200 million.
He further revealed that Ibori had attempted to bribe the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, led by Nuhu Ribadu, with $15 million, which was subsequently submitted as evidence to the Central Bank of Nigeria.
It is worth noting that Ribadu currently serves as the incumbent Security Adviser to President Tinubu.
