Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has declared that poverty should not exist in Nigeria, emphasizing that the country’s abundant resources should be harnessed for the betterment of its citizens.
Obasanjo made these remarks during a dinner organized in his honor by the Abia State Government at the Government House in Umuahia on Friday.
According to him, Nigeria is richly endowed by God, and there is no reason why Nigerians should suffer poverty.
“Nigerians have no business with poverty because God has given us all that we need,” Obasanjo said.
“If we are mismanaging what God has given us, we do not have God to blame, we have ourselves to blame.”
The former president praised Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, for his transformative leadership, noting the positive impact it has had on the people of Abia.
He reiterated his commitment to advocating for good governance across the country, stressing that the welfare of Nigerians should be the priority of any leader.
“For me, whether you don’t greet me or I greet you and you don’t answer, what is important to me is that the people of this country are getting what they deserve, and what they deserve is good governance,” Obasanjo added.
Governor Otti, reflecting on his political journey, shared the challenges he faced, including contested elections, and expressed hope for the future. “Once you have vision, you have to keep to it. It took us ten years to get here.
The two elections we contested from 2015 to 2019, we won clearly, but they were all stolen. A lot of people had given up hope, but I was sure that I heard clearly from God,” he said.
Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, also spoke at the event, urging Abians to prepare for the 2027 elections, emphasizing the need for early mobilization to ensure victory.
“APC and other parties are already mobilizing, and if we don’t prepare now, we may lose out completely,” Amaechi warned.
