Former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has  teamed up with Dr. Aisha Muhammed-Oyebode, daughter of the late Gen. Murtala Muhammed, to commemorate her 60th birthday at the Treasure of Love Missionaries Orphanage in Alapere, Lagos.

Obasanjo, the once second-in-command to Gen. Murtala Muhammed and later his successor following the tragic coup in 1976, joined Muhammed-Oyebode in a celebration that extended beyond personal joy to a broader commitment to social responsibility.

The visit, occurring just hours before the dawn of the new year, served as a profound moment for sober reflection, as highlighted by Kehinde Akinyemi, the former President’s Special Assistant on Media. Akinyemi noted that this occasion presented an opportune time for positive change and reflection on the deeper meaning of life.

During their visit to the Treasure of Love Missionary Orphanage, Obasanjo, accompanied by his daughter, Dr. Kofo Blackshire, and her family, engaged with the facility, gaining firsthand insights into the impactful work carried out by the Murtala Muhammed Foundation.

Commending Muhammed-Oyebode’s choice of the orphanage as the venue for her diamond birthday celebration, Obasanjo, also the Chairman of the Murtala Muhammed Foundation, expressed admiration for the meaningful gesture, underlining the importance of social responsibility.

Dr. Muhammed-Oyebode, a distinguished human rights advocate and CEO of the Murtala Muhammed Foundation, utilized the occasion to shed light on pressing global issues.

She passionately emphasized the urgent need to dismantle barriers obstructing peaceful negotiations and to enhance the protection of women and children in conflict zones.

The celebration took a poignant turn as Muhammed-Oyebode dedicated her diamond birthday anniversary to the memory of the remaining 91 Chibok girls, the five Dapchi girls who tragically lost their lives, and the unreleased Leah Sharibu.

Expressing solidarity with their parents, she conveyed enduring empathy and compassion.

In a resolute message, Muhammed-Oyebode articulated her commitment to advocating for a world where the rights and dignity of every individual, especially women and children, are safeguarded.

Invoking the spirit of empathy, she called on the global community to unite in creating a future where peace and security prevail, alleviating the suffering of innocent lives.

Drawing inspiration from her late father, General Murtala Muhammed, Muhammed-Oyebode echoed his historic “Africa has come of age” speech.

Urging all Nigerians to overcome challenges and eliminate barriers obstructing the country’s and the continent’s greatness, she emphasized the collective responsibility to address corruption, insecurity, and governance issues for Nigeria to flourish.

Expressing sincere gratitude, Muhammed-Oyebode thanked President Obasanjo for making the day memorable, acknowledging his swift response even on short notice.

The celebration not only marked a personal milestone but also served as a powerful testament to the enduring spirit of service and advocacy for a better world.
