Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed that his birth was delayed due to alleged supernatural influences, describing how his mother endured a challenging 12-month pregnancy.
The former leader made this disclosure during a drama presentation titled “Aremu omo Asabi,” held in memory of his late mother, Mrs. Bernice Obasanjo, 66 years after her passing.
The event took place at the main auditorium of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
According to a statement released by his Media Assistant, Mr. Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo recounted how he was told that witches and wizards were responsible for the prolonged pregnancy, necessitating divine intervention.
He lamented that his mother did not live to witness his rise to prominence and to enjoy the fruits of her labor.
“My mother carried my pregnancy for 12 months before I was born, and it was said that witches and wizards were at play, making her suffer,” Obasanjo shared.
“She bore nine children, but only two of us, myself and my sister, survived. I was the only one who received an education, as my father believed that educating a female child was unnecessary since she would end up in the kitchen.”
The event also featured remarks from Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, represented by his Deputy, Noimot Salako-Oyedele.
The governor highlighted the pivotal role of mothers in shaping society, describing Mrs. Bernice Obasanjo as a great woman whose influence endures through her son, Obasanjo, a significant figure in Nigeria’s history.
He praised the musical drama, “Aremu Omo Asabi,” not just as a historical recount but as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices mothers make for their children.
“This tribute is a call to action for all of us to honour and support mothers in every way possible,” Governor Abiodun stated.
“It reminds us of our collective responsibility to create an enabling environment where every mother’s hope for their children can flourish.
This is why the present administration continues to pursue policies that ensure access to quality education, healthcare, and opportunities for all, so that the dreams that mothers have for their children can be realised.”
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Salu Hundeyin, also spoke at the event.
He commended Obasanjo for honouring his late mother after 66 years, emphasizing the special role mothers play as instruments of God and humanity.
He called for them to be treated with the utmost respect and honour.
In addition to reflecting on his mother’s hardships and resilience, Obasanjo pledged support for the drama troupe’s ambition to set a Guinness World Record for the longest open drama performance.
