Obaseki Accuses FG  Of  Planning To Silence Him

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has leveled serious allegations against the Federal Government, accusing them of stifling his ability to voice concerns over governmental decisions.

In a recent statement, Obaseki expressed his concern that the Federal Government’s intentions to curtail free speech and suppress honest dialogue could hinder Nigerians’ ability to address the pressing issues facing the nation.

Tensions escalated after the Federal Government criticized Obaseki for his remarks on Nigeria’s economic situation. The governor had previously attributed the country’s worsening conditions to unfavorable policies adopted by the Federal Government.

Obaseki specifically targeted President Bola Tinubu’s administration, criticizing its handling of the fuel subsidy removal and its resulting hardships for Nigerians. He also decried the perceived lack of authenticity in the Federal Government’s palliative initiatives.

In response, Obaseki’s office released a statement through Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Osa Nehikhare, on Sunday, August 27, 2023. Obaseki remarked, “It’s disheartening to witness the Federal Government attempting to muzzle both citizens and a democratically elected governor, preventing us from speaking up during these challenging times.”

The statement drew parallels to a previous incident in 2021, when Governor Obaseki raised concerns about the illicit printing of money by the Federal Government through the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Addressing allegations of non-participation, the statement clarified that Governor Obaseki has consistently attended all National Economic Council (NEC) meetings throughout his tenure.

It emphasized the state’s accomplishments, such as the globally acclaimed Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (EdoBEST) program and the extensive Edo State Oil Palm Programme (ESOPP).

While acknowledging areas needing attention, such as neglected federal roads, the statement criticized the Federal Government’s decision to prevent the state from intervening and repairing these vital routes.

The statement concluded by questioning the Minister’s confrontational approach, suggesting that collaborative efforts and a united approach are necessary during these trying times.

In the midst of these allegations and counterarguments, Nigerians anxiously await further developments in the ongoing dispute between Edo State and the Federal Government.
