Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has accused the Bola Tinubu administration of issuing death threats against him, describing the government as authoritarian and intolerant of dissenting views.
In a statement posted on his X account, the former Anambra State governor alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) had resorted to intimidation and threats to silence him after his New Year message, which criticised the administration’s governance style.
Obi, who came third in the presidential election, claimed that his family and associates were being targeted for supporting his political stance.
“Have I really crossed the line?” he asked, challenging anyone to identify specific instances in his New Year message that warranted threats.
“I will not be silenced in my resolve to speak truthfully, especially as our nation continues to drift toward undemocratic practices,” he declared, labelling the current administration as a regime that suppresses free speech.
In response, APC spokesperson Felix Morka, during an ARISE TV interview, launched a blistering attack on Obi, describing him as “irrational” and a “prophet of doom” intent on destabilising the Tinubu-led government.
Morka accused Obi of “shooting from the hip” with baseless criticisms and suggested that the opposition leader deserved “whatever he gets” for his alleged attempts to incite the public.
“He is absolutely irrational in his thinking and public commentary,” Morka said, adding that Obi had a lackluster tenure as Anambra governor.
The APC further claimed that Obi was sulking over his electoral loss and plotting to undermine the government through “maliciously deceptive” statements.
The back-and-forth escalates the already tense relationship between the opposition leader and the ruling party, raising concerns about the state of free speech and political tolerance in Nigeria.
While Obi calls for a freer society, the APC maintains he is using inflammatory rhetoric to destabilise governance.
