A former Ogun State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Adeola Odedina, has been awarded the prestigious 2024 University of Wolverhampton Alumni Honour Award for Lifetime Achievement.
This award, which celebrates alumni who have made significant, enduring contributions to their field or society, recognized Dr. Odedina’s extensive work in agriculture and mentorship in Nigeria.
Dr. Odedina, a 1991 graduate of Wolverhampton Polytechnic (now the University of Wolverhampton), emerged as the award winner among other notable nominees, including Sandra Wallace CBE, James Meehan, and Razwana Begum Abdul Rahim.
The university acknowledged Odedina’s impact on agricultural development and youth mentorship, particularly his efforts in fostering smart agriculture and agribusiness skills among Nigerian youth.
He has reportedly mentored over 40,000 young Nigerians in agriculture.
Expressing his delight, Dr. Odedina described the honour as a crowning moment of his life and career.
“This is the highest point of my life and career. Listening to the profiles of my fellow finalists, I thought, ‘Do I stand a chance?’ I am happy this is a reality,” he remarked.
He also shared that he received congratulatory messages from prominent Nigerian figures, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo and African Development Bank President, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, both of whom he described as mentors.
Reflecting on his educational journey, Dr. Odedina noted how his degree in Agricultural Education from Wolverhampton has been pivotal in his career, particularly during his tenure as Commissioner for Agriculture in Ogun State.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, he led initiatives to establish a robust roadmap for agricultural advancement in the state, which he credits to the practical knowledge he gained from his studies.
At the award ceremony, Dr. Odedina, flanked by his wife, Prof. Joy Odedina, and daughter, took the opportunity to advocate for the University of Wolverhampton, recommending it to anyone seeking practical skills and career advancement, especially in agriculture.
