Families of the victims of the 2018 Offa bank robbery in Kwara State have filed a lawsuit against the Kwara State Government, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and former Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed.
The claimants are seeking N2.1 billion as compensation for the loss of their relatives in the tragic incident.
The suit, filed at a high court in Ilorin, alleges that the state government was complicit in the robbery, citing that some of the items used during the attack were reportedly found within the government house premises under the administration of Abdulfatah Ahmed.
The robbery, which took place on April 5, 2018, involved a series of attacks on the Nigeria Police Station, Owode, and several banks in Offa.
It resulted in the deaths of multiple individuals, including police officers and civilians.
The claimants argue that the convicted robbers confessed in court to being affiliated with a political group linked to Saraki.
According to their claims, exhibits recovered from the crime scene, including vehicles branded with Saraki’s name, were presented as evidence during the trial.
One of the convicted robbers, Ayoade Akinnibosun (also known as AY), reportedly confessed that both Saraki and Ahmed were their political sponsors, providing support for disruptive activities during elections.
The families, represented by lawyers Johnson Usman (SAN), Yakubu Philemon (SAN), M. Abubakar (SAN), and A. Philip (SAN), are demanding N1.5 billion as compensation, N500 million as general damages, and N100 million for legal costs.
The plaintiffs in the suit include Abraham Makinde, Lateef Raheem, Adeshina Ayesanmi, and Monsurat Adebayo, who are suing on behalf of their families.
The defendants named in the lawsuit are the current governor of Kwara State, the attorney-general of the state, Saraki, and Ahmed.
The families argue that the loss of their relatives, many of whom were breadwinners, has left them in dire financial straits.
They are calling on the court to hold the defendants accountable and provide justice for the victims.
