Barely two weeks after the Labour Party (LP) in Ogun State reached out to the Chief Promoter of the Alternative Movement, Otunba Segun Showunmi, with an offer to hand him its governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 election, the Action Democratic Party (ADP) has also moved to court the former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant.
Leaders of the ADP, led by its Ogun State Chairperson, Yeye Olufunke Olarenwaju, visited Showunmi at his residence in the Ibara Housing Estate, Abeokuta, on Monday, where they formally invited him to join the party and fly its flag in the next governorship election.
Olarenwaju said the visit was part of the party’s strategic efforts to strengthen its chances in 2027 by presenting a candidate with proven political experience and grassroots appeal.
She described Showunmi as a credible politician and seasoned mobiliser who possesses the capacity to galvanise support across the state.
“We want him to come and contest the next governorship election under ADP. He is a credible politician and a grassroots mobiliser. We have found him worthy of the governorship seat in Ogun State, and that is why we have come to invite him to contest on the platform of ADP,” she said.
Showunmi, who has remained a major political figure in Ogun State, thanked the ADP leadership for the visit and the confidence reposed in him, but said he would consult widely before taking a final decision on his next political move.
In a light-hearted response, he told the party leaders, “ADP, you’re mine and I’m yours.”
Speaking later with journalists, Showunmi said his decision would be guided by the stability, organisation and acceptability of the political platform on which he would contest the 2027 governorship election.
He also declared his readiness to be adopted by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) should the party consider him suitable for the ticket.
“What I expect will happen is that at some point in time, we will look at which party is the most stable, the most acceptable and the most organised. Then we will run,” he said.
Showunmi added that his political journey and years of participation in party politics should count in any serious consideration of his ambition.
“And if the President wants to do it well, he will tell the people in the APC that Showunmi has paid his dues and that it is his time.
“So, if the APC wants to adopt me, I am available to be adopted,” he said.
