A political activist and Convener of the Ogun West Initiative (OWI), Olootu Bolaji Adeniji, has declared that the Yewa-Awori senatorial district is strategically positioned to produce the next governor of Ogun State in the 2027 elections.
Speaking with journalists in Abeokuta over the weekend, Adeniji emphasized that the district’s longstanding quest for governorship, spanning over four decades, has evolved from a sectional plea to a statewide agenda driven by equity, justice, and inclusivity.
“It is a notorious fact that since the creation of Ogun State, out of its four major ethnic divisions—Ijebu, Remo, Egba, and Yewa-Awori—only the Yewa-Awori division is yet to produce a governor,” Adeniji said.
“This consistent advocacy is rooted in the need for fairness and inclusivity in leadership.”
Adeniji, who is also a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), stated that the district is approaching 2027 with renewed confidence, strategic planning, and a commitment to self-reliance.
“Unlike in the past, Ogun West is no longer approaching this aspiration from a position of weakness or dependency.
Historically, we relied on external political godfathers, financing, and structures to push candidates chosen for us. This approach often led to unfavorable outcomes,” he said.
He added that the district now boasts credible and qualified candidates capable of leading Ogun State to unprecedented growth.
“We are taking a more assertive and independent approach. Ogun West has the resources, structures, and goodwill to back its aspirations, and we will present the best of our potentials without over-reliance on external forces.”
When asked about Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, whose name has been widely mentioned as a potential gubernatorial hopeful, Adeniji commended the senator’s contributions to Ogun West.
“Senator Adeola has demonstrated exceptional capacity and influence through his interventions in healthcare, education, entrepreneurial support, and social services.
His infrastructural projects and empowerment programs have endeared him to communities across the district,” he said.
Adeniji urged all well-meaning Yewa-Awori indigenes to support Adeola should he declare his intention to contest for the governorship.
The OWI convener dismissed speculations that Governor Dapo Abiodun may be backing a preferred successor, expressing optimism that the governor would ensure a transparent and inclusive primary process.
“Governor Abiodun, as the leader of the party, understands the importance of equity and due process, especially given his experience in the 2019 gubernatorial race.
I trust he will allow a free, fair, and credible primary where the most preferred aspirant emerges,” Adeniji said.
He also highlighted the need for Ogun West to take responsibility for its political destiny.
“Winning an election requires a coalition of support from stakeholders across the state. This time, Ogun West will field a strong candidate with grassroots appeal, competence, and resources to run a successful campaign,” he added.
