The Ogun State Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Abioro Itunu Temitayo, has announced his resignation, citing overwhelming pressures and personal fatigue as the reasons for stepping down.
In a heartfelt letter addressed to the party leadership, Abioro expressed his admiration for the ADC’s structure, support system, and ideology, while acknowledging the immense demands of his position.
“I love absolutely everything about this political party; the structures, the support, and everyone who has helped in making this party great, from the National Chairman, High Chief Ralph Okey Nwosu, all the way to the ward chairmen,” Abioro wrote.
“But there comes a time when you ask yourself, can you do this again and again?”
Abioro highlighted the emotional toll and pressures that accompanied his role as the chairman of Ogun ADC, the second-largest opposition party in the state.
Despite describing his tenure as a “dream” and a “fairy tale,” he admitted that his energy and passion had waned over time.
Reflecting on his contributions, Abioro noted that the party had grown significantly under his leadership, particularly after recovering from setbacks during the 2023 general elections.
He commended the party’s candidates in the recently concluded 2024 local government elections, describing their efforts as dynamic and inspiring.
However, he lamented the challenges he faced, including “insane levels of pressure, suspicion, malice, and contempt” that marred his time in office.
These issues, he explained, prompted his decision to pave the way for new leadership to take the party to greater heights.
“I believe the leadership of the party should fall to someone else who can take this party from where it is currently to the next level,” he wrote.
Abioro emphasized his hope that his tenure had inspired young people to step into leadership roles within the ADC.
He also expressed gratitude to the party’s stakeholders and supporters for their collaboration and shared commitment to its vision.
While he expressed a desire to remain involved with the party in some capacity, Abioro firmly stated his intention to step down as chairman effective immediately or as soon as a replacement is found.
The resignation marks the end of an era for Ogun ADC, with Abioro urging members to cherish the memories of his leadership and work collectively toward the party’s future success.
Efforts to reach the national leadership of the ADC for comments on the next steps were ongoing as of press time.
