The Ogun State House of Assembly’s Committee on Transportation has sounded a cautionary call to action, urging Local Government Council Chairmen across the state to intervene and curb the alleged unwarranted harassment of motorcycle riders.
The harassment is purportedly being carried out by unauthorized individuals who falsely claim to be enforcing traffic regulations, including the mandatory use of crash helmets.
The stern warning was articulated by Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation, during a meeting held today at the Assembly Complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The deliberations centered around issues concerning various transport unions in relation to motorcycle riders within the state.
Hon. Elemide emphasized that the legitimate enforcement of traffic rules and regulations falls squarely within the purview of established entities such as the motor traffic division of the Nigeria Police, the State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), and the Federal Road Safety Corps.
He unequivocally stressed that any unauthorized individuals caught harassing motorcycle riders will be handed over to the appropriate law enforcement authorities.
The impetus for this warning stems from a rising tide of grievances expressed by motorcycle riders and their affiliated unions.
These complaints revolve around the activities of certain miscreants masquerading as enforcers endorsed by local government councils.
Hon. Elemide sternly cautioned these individuals to desist, underscoring that only officially recognized road traffic regulating agencies have the prerogative to apprehend or penalize those in violation of traffic laws.
Highlighting the overarching need for maintaining serenity and orderliness across every nook and cranny of the state, the Committee Chairman emphasized the importance of upholding a peaceful atmosphere for all residents.
