The Ogun State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of one of its prominent members, Mrs. Bukola Agbakaizu, who reportedly slumped and died on Monday.
Agbakaizu, a veteran broadcaster with the state-owned Ogun State Television (OGTV), was said to have collapsed while preparing for her afternoon shift and was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Idi Aba, Abeokuta, where she was later pronounced dead.
Until her death, the 52-year-old journalist was an ex-officio member of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council, and a longstanding member of NAWOJ in the state.
In a condolence statement signed by the Chairperson of Ogun NAWOJ, Comrade Sekinat Salam, the association described Agbakaizu’s passing as a “rude shock,” noting that her wealth of experience and exemplary leadership would be deeply missed.
“Ogun NAWOJ received the news of Mrs. Bukola Agbakaizu with a rude shock. Her death came at a time when her experience and leadership were most needed by the association,” the statement read.
Describing the deceased as a consummate professional, Salam said Agbakaizu’s dedication to duty and love for humanity stood her out in the journalism profession.
“She was not just a seasoned journalist but a mother, mentor, and a symbol of compassion. Her love, dedication, and passion for the pen profession will forever be remembered by her colleagues and the larger media community,” she added.
Agbakaizu, a mother of two, was also praised for her deep spirituality and commitment to service, both within and outside her professional life.
“Though she passed on at 52, her legacy of faith, resilience, and selfless service to humanity will remain with us.
“We pray that her soul finds eternal peace in the Lord, and may the Almighty continue to protect the family she left behind. Rest on, the amazon of our profession,” the statement concluded.
