The Ogun  State Chief Judge,Hon. Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu, has extended amnesty to 46 inmates during a recent jail delivery operation at Oba and Ibara Correctional Centres in Abeokuta.

PLATFORM TIMES reports that the move was a  step towards alleviating overcrowding and instilling hope within correctional facilities in the State.

Justice Dipeolu disclosed that 31 inmates were liberated from the Oba Correctional Centre, while 15 were released from Ibara Correctional Centre, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 46.

This action supplements the earlier amnesty granted to 3 inmates at the Ilaro Correctional Centre, highlighting the judiciary’s commitment to fairness and rehabilitation.

Expressing concern over the dire conditions and overcrowding at the Oba Correctional Centre, Justice Dipeolu underscored the imperative of addressing the plight of pre-trial detainees, many of whom have languished behind bars for prolonged periods without conviction.

She emphasised the necessity of prioritising swift justice and rehabilitation as effective strategies to tackle the root causes of congestion.

While commending the management of the Ibara Correctional Centre for their efforts in maintaining a relatively conducive environment, the Chief Judge urged sustained action to resolve persistent challenges within the facility.

Accompanied by a team of judicial officials and correctional center authorities, Hon. Justice Dipeolu reaffirmed the judiciary’s commitment to promoting fairness, compassion, and effective rehabilitation within the criminal justice system.
