Ogun State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Adijat Adeleye, has emphasized the importance of proper documentation for children residing in orphanages across the state.
Adeleye stressed that maintaining accurate records is vital to ensure accountability, safety, transparency, and efficiency in the management of these homes.
Speaking during a training programme for social workers, Adeleye highlighted the need for improved data analysis in orphanages.
The event, organized by the Ministry of Women Affairs in collaboration with Both Ends Believing (BEB) and the Association of Orphanage and Home Operators in Nigeria (ASOHON), took place at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, on Friday.
The commissioner reiterated the Ogun State government’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of all children, regardless of their status.
She emphasized that children’s rights must be protected, and they should feel a sense of belonging within the society.
According to Adeleye, the government is determined to ensure that complacency in the administration of orphanages becomes a thing of the past.
“I want you to know that the present administration in Ogun State is committed to the welfare of all children in the state, and the era of being complacent is gone,” Adeleye stated.
“Whether as social workers or orphanage home operators, this time, there is a need for us to have proper documentation of what is going on in our homes, both for present reasons and for the future of the children and the homes we run.
“The training program aimed to equip social workers and orphanage operators with the necessary skills to improve their documentation processes, ultimately fostering better care for children.
Adeleye encouraged the trainees to seize the opportunity to enhance their career paths, noting that the training would enable them to provide more efficient services.
The National President of ASOHON, Dr. Gabriel Oyediji, also spoke at the event, explaining the critical need for a paradigm shift in record-keeping from analog to digital systems.
According to Oyediji, this transition is essential for ensuring accuracy and timeliness in managing children’s welfare.
Delivering a lecture on the creation of child-first software for orphanage homes, BEB’s Country Manager, Mr. Silas Nyam, outlined the advantages of utilizing digital tools for record-keeping.
He explained that the software enables orphanage homes to store and track children’s personal, medical, and educational records.
It also facilitates monitoring of children’s progress, goals, and outcomes, while managing counseling therapy, among other features.
Representatives of the social workers, Adesola Omobolaji and Talabi Olusesan, expressed gratitude to the Ministry and its partners, noting that the training would significantly enhance their ability to deliver quality services in their respective roles.
The Ogun State government’s focus on improving child welfare aligns with its broader efforts to protect vulnerable populations and ensure that every child in the state, especially those in orphanages, receives proper care and attention.
