…Says focus should be on strengthening Muslims, not just conversions
Ogun State Deputy Governor, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, has urged Islamic societies to intensify efforts in transmitting the core values and norms of Islam to younger generations through modern communication channels, particularly social media.
Salako-Oyedele gave the charge while receiving members of the Alasalatu Society of Nigeria and West Africa (ASONWA) led by its Khaleefah and Missioner, Khaleefah Akorede Abdulfatai, during a courtesy visit to her office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
She stressed that Islamic propagation (Dawah), which in the past was carried out through physical town-to-town outreach, should now be taken online to meet contemporary realities.
“In the 30s and 40s, Dawah was done by moving from one town to another across Yorubaland and Ilorin. But in the 21st century, social media has made things easier. Most young people spend their time online.
“If you are not on Instagram, you are on Facebook; if not on Facebook, you are on TikTok. This is the way to catch the next generation,” the Deputy Governor said.
Salako-Oyedele noted that Islam must not be left to preachers alone, stressing that leaders and followers alike must actively promote the faith. She explained that as Islamic societies train more spiritual leaders, equal attention must be given to retaining and expanding the congregation.
“As Muslim faithful, our first duty in Dawah is not about converting people but ensuring that Muslims do not drift away from the religion,” she added.
While decorating the Deputy Governor as Patron of the society, ASONWA’s Grand Patron and former Military Administrator of Bauchi and Sokoto States, Captain Rasheed Adisa Raji (rtd), praised her commitment to Islam and women empowerment. He described her as “religious, kind, accommodating and a worthy ambassador of Islam.”
Similarly, the ASONWA Missioner, Khaleefah Abdulfatai, commended Salako-Oyedele’s consistent support for the growth of Islam, particularly her encouragement of women, praying that Allah grants her guidance and strength to do more.
