Ogun State Deputy Governor, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, has urged residents to champion the protection of human rights, inspired by the veteran philanthropist’s dedication.

Salako-Oyedele said this on Sunday  at the 95th birthday celebration of elder statesman Otunba Lana Akintan, held at Oja-Odan in Yewa North Local Government Area of the state.

The event was  marked by the inauguration of the Otunba Lana Akintan Human Rights Foundation.

Speaking amidst a gathering of distinguished public figures, including members of the House of Representatives and local royalty, Salako-Oyedele praised Pa Lana Akintan for establishing a Human Rights Steering Committee aimed at improving the lives of underprivileged communities.

She described the occasion as unique, stating, “This is my first time attending a birthday party where a steering committee for a Human Rights Foundation is instituted.”

The Deputy Governor commended the nonagenarian’s legacy, emphasizing that his actions set a benchmark for philanthropy and social justice.

“I commend Baba for the bold initiative. I hope other philanthropists will see reason to emulate Pa Lana Akintan in the course of fighting for the oppressed,” she said.

She urged attendees to reflect on their contributions to humanity, highlighting Akintan’s impactful and purposeful life.

In addition to the foundation’s launch, the Deputy Governor honoured the celebrant for a personal milestone: the commissioning of a Plaza named after her mother.

This event marked a historic first, as it was the inaugural Plaza dedicated to a woman in the region.

“Today, I am commissioning the first Plaza on which a woman’s name is inscribed as a form of honour,” Salako-Oyedele stated, expressing hope for more such tributes in the future.

The ceremony was attended by several prominent figures, including Hon. Gboyega Nasir Isaka (Yewa North/Imeko-Afon), Hon. Isiaq Akinlade (Yewa South/Ipokia Federal Constituency), and Hon. Haruna Wahab Egungbohun (Ketu II State Constituency).

Former Speaker of the Ogun House of Assembly, Rt Hon Suraj Adekunbi, also graced the event.

Royalty present included Oba Oyebanji Adetunji Olowobese (Oloja of Oja-Odan), Oba Lukmon Kuoye (Olu of Imasai), and Oba Amusa Adetunji Dosumu Elebute (Oba of Ebute Igbooro), among others.
