In a remarkable triumph, a female students’ football team from African Church Grammar School in Ita-Eko, Abeokuta, Ogun State, has emerged victorious in the Nigeria Secondary Schools Flag Football Season II, known as “Aketi 2023”.
The team’s exceptional performance secured them scholarships worth N100 million, paving the way for their higher education pursuits.
During a ceremonial event in Abeokuta, the State representatives honored the team by presenting them with a trophy.
Professor Abayomi Arigbabu, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Science, and Technology, expressed heartfelt appreciation to the school for consistently bringing pride to the State through achievements in major competitions, notably in JETS and School Sports.
Professor Arigbabu revealed that the current government has sponsored over 200 students to participate in various competitions, spanning from local to international levels.
This strategic support aims to foster competitiveness and elevate performance standards, underscoring the government’s commitment to celebrating exceptional students.
Reiterating the significance of flagship secondary schools, an initiative pioneered by Dapo Abiodun, Professor Arigbabu highlighted their role in promoting and sustaining a superior educational legacy.
The State is recognized for its outstanding educators who nurture productive learning outcomes, an achievement that Ogun takes immense pride in.
Acknowledging the efforts of the Principal, Pastor Olushola Elegbede, and the dedicated school staff, Professor Arigbabu praised their diligence.
He encouraged the scholarship beneficiaries to maintain their focus and hard work in pursuit of further academic accomplishments, emphasizing the value of the opportunity before them.
“To achieve your academic goals, you must persevere and maximize this rare opportunity,” stated Arigbabu.
Speaking on the championship, Mr. Olarotimi Okeleye, Southwest Chairman of the Nigeria School Sports Federation and Director of School Sports in Ogun State,
disclosed that the competition was a collaborative effort involving the Nigeria America Football Association, Nigeria School Sports Federation, and the Ondo and Ogun State Governments.
Mr. Okeleye proudly announced that representatives from African Church Grammar School secured the 1st and 3rd positions in the Male and Female categories respectively, outshining competition from 75 participating schools across the nation.
Grateful for the opportunity to participate in the championship, the Captains of the Male and Female teams, Morinsola Sobayo and Aishat Soneye respectively, expressed their determination to continue bringing pride to the State with their unwavering dedication and excellence.
