The Ogun State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a cleaner and safer environment for residents, following recent concerns over indiscriminate waste disposal and industrial pollution.
Dr. Ola Oresanya, the State Commissioner for Environment, spoke on Monday during a live interview on Zents 90.9 FM’s Voice of the Patriots, stressing that his ministry is leaving no stone unturned in the fight against environmental hazards.
He cited the recent closure of several battery recycling factories in Ogijo as an example of proactive measures taken by the government.
“The factories were sealed by our ministry in collaboration with the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA). Investigations are ongoing to prevent future violations,” Oresanya said.
Addressing public concerns about harsh penalties for improper waste disposal, the commissioner announced a shift in strategy.
“I have directed the Ogun Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA) to rescind the plan to arrest and fine offenders. Instead, violators will perform community service as mandated by environmental laws,” he disclosed.
Oresanya also highlighted the ministry’s efforts to strengthen collaboration with Environmental Health Officers across the state.
He acknowledged the challenges posed by their non-recruitment, assuring that measures would be taken to empower them to execute their duties effectively as partners in progress.
“The government remains committed to a sustainable and healthier environment for all Ogun residents. We urge everyone to embrace proper waste management practices,” he added.
