The Ogun State Government has ordered the immediate suspension of the ongoing process to select a new Awujale of Ijebuland, citing multiple petitions, security concerns and the need to preserve peace and the integrity of the revered traditional stool.
The directive was contained in a letter dated January 20, 2026, addressed to the Chairman of Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ganiyu Hamzat.
In the letter, the government described the Awujale stool as one of the foremost traditional institutions in Yorubaland and Ogun State, noting that the late Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who reigned for 65 years, elevated the modern prestige and national relevance of the throne.
According to the commissioner, the stature of the stool and the legacy of the immediate past monarch have drawn intense public attention and scrutiny to the ongoing selection process, prompting the government to act in the overall interest of peace and stability.
“The State Government has received several petitions and reports from security agencies and other key stakeholders concerning the process.
In order to safeguard public order and preserve the veneration of the stool, it has become imperative to halt the selection process at this time,” the letter read.
Hamzat explained that the decision was taken in line with the provisions of the Obas and Chiefs’ Law of Ogun State, 2021, which empowers the government to set aside any appointment process if it considers such action necessary in the interest of peace, order and good governance.
The commissioner therefore directed the Ijebu-Ode Local Government chairman to immediately convey the government’s decision to the Awujale kingmakers’ council and the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, urging them to suspend all actions connected to the selection exercise pending further directives.
The development has effectively stalled the emergence of a successor to the late Oba Adetona, whose death marked the end of one of the longest reigns in Nigeria’s traditional history, as stakeholders await the state government’s next line of action on the revered throne of Ijebuland.
